A 2-year study done at the University of Virginia shows that at least 1/3 of students entering kindergarten are not ready. In particular, they lack the skills needed in the areas of literacy, math, social skills, and self-regulation.
According to the January 21st article in the Virginian Pilot, UVA researchers say that "educators should consider social-emotional skills as a learning target on the same level as academic skills."
