Virginia's Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS - 2 - 2.25 hours)
It is important that all teachers, directors and administrators attend an ELDS training because it is the expectation of the State Department of Education that these standards be used by all preschool programs in Virginia.
Because centers and schools across the state are not all using the same curriculum, it is critical that they follow the state standards. Doing so will ensure that every child is exposed to the same research-based foundational skills. This will ensure a more level “playing field” for children as they enter kindergarten, meaning they will be off to a better start. Isn’t that what we are all about in preschool?

- Recognize the ways that the ELDS will take the guess work out of teaching.
- Become familiar with the organization of the ELDS
- Understand the purposes of and uses for the ELDS
- Learn to embed strategies from more than one ELDS Developmental Area into a single activity
