Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) (2 - 2.5 hours)
This workshop introduces research-based developmental milestones as determined by the VA Dept. of Education in the state standards - ELDS. Participants will learn which teaching methods are considered age-appropriate for preschoolers. Developmentally appropriate teaching practices, strategies, and activities will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on ways to teach using fun, hands-on activities rather than focusing on worksheets and flashcards.

Language Development (2 - 2.5 hours)
This workshop demonstrates that increasing a child’s language skills leads to improved behaviors and relationships, while enhancing the ability to learn. Topics include strategies for eliciting language, modeling and facilitating interactions, and enhancing vocabulary. Techniques will be practiced by participants during multiple activities.

Learning Styles (3 hours)
This workshop focuses on the unique characteristics of boys' and girls' brain functioning. Participants will hear the findings of brain studies and discover how these gender differences impact behavior and learning styles. This will lead to examining ways to best meet the needs of all students.

Strategies for Students with Special Needs (2 - 2.5 hours)
This workshop will guide participants to "reframe" their view of a child with special needs in order to capitalize on their strengths, while helping them compensate for their weaknesses. Strategies for children with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and developmental delays will be covered. A brief overview of an IEP and how to read/use one will be provided.
