Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP)
This workshop introduces developmental milestones as determined by the VA Dept. of Education (VDOE). Teachers will learn what is considered age-appropriate for preschoolers. Developmentally appropriate teaching practices (DAP), strategies, and activities will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on ways to teach using fun, DAP hands-on activities rather than focusing on worksheets and flashcards.
Language Development
This workshop shows that increasing a child’s language skills leads to improved behaviors and relationships, while enhancing the ability to learn. Topics include strategies for eliciting language, modeling and facilitation of interactions, vocabulary expansion, and milieu teaching. Techniques will be practiced by participants during multiple activities.
Gender Learning Styles
This workshop focuses on the unique characteristics of each gender in the classroom. Participants will learn about studies done on the brain functioning, how this impacts behavior and learning styles, and ways to best meet student needs.
Strategies for Students with Special Needs
This workshop will explain the process of referring a child for SpEd services, testing and eligibility, and the contents of an IEP. The concept of “reframing” in order to see and capitalize on the strengths of each student, while guiding them to compensate for their weaknesses will be introduced. Some basic strategies for children receiving speech/language, occupational, and/or physical therapy will be discussed. Information on characteristics of and strategies for children with ADHD, on the autism spectrum, and with developmental delays will be covered.
